UC San Diego is hiring a Senior Marine Mechanician!

Under general supervision, perform highly skilled machinists tasks in support of oceanographic projects.

• Work from blueprints, rough sketches, written or oral instructions; perform senior level skills as a machinist operating all machines in the shop including ProtoTrak controlled mills.
• Uses both HASS CNC mills and lathes as needed to complete tasks.
• Utilizes Master Cam programming software to program HASS CNC machines.
• Operate heavy equipment including lifts, and wire rope spooling winches; Applies principles and operation of hydraulics; Develop, build, install and maintain mechanical equipment for scientific groups for use aboard ship and at shore laboratories.

QUALIFICATIONS

• Six (6) years of experience in machine shop work, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

• Five (5) years of experience on both HAAS CNC mills and lathes. Knowledgeable in performing math (e.g. trigonometry) and calculations to operate CNC machines.

• Five (5) years of experience using Master Cam programming software to program HAAS CNC machines.

• Proven knowledge and experience of all machine shop equipment and processes, including: mills, lathes, grinding, cutting, horizontal boring, presses, brakes, rollers, shears, and CNC operations both turning and milling.

• Demonstrated experience with Proto Trak mills and lathes.

• Proven experience with laboratory machine shop equipment focusing on the selection of materials, machine operations and safety procedures.

• Proven ability to design and fabricate shipboard/scientific equipment specified for research expeditions.

• Demonstrated ability to disassemble, renew and replace hydraulic hoses, "O" rings, and reassemble.

• Proven knowledge of operational controls and capacity of overhead hoists, forklifts, cable trucks, and wire spoolers.

• Skill to utilize available resources efficiently including electronic and mechanical test equipment, technical literature, heavy machinery, machine tools, hand tools, and transportation equipment.

• Proficient computer skills including computer-aided design, word processing, CAD Cam drafting.

• Demonstrated ability to read blueprints, drafts, and sketches.

• Basic knowledge of marine construction and general familiarity with accepted maritime practices in workmanship and safety in order to comply with the certification requirements of the U.S. Coast Guard, U.S. Navy, the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS), and the ASME Code.

• Strong problem-solving skills. Proven ability to disassemble, perform maintenance, and reassemble.

• Excellent interpersonal communication skills with personnel at all levels. Ability to work on multiple projects. Ability to organize, coordinate and delegate tasks to temporary personnel.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS

• Job offer is contingent upon a satisfactory clearance based on background check results.

• Available to work overtime as needed, and travel overseas as required.

• Must be able to obtain and maintain NIWC/federal clearance to access the Naval Base Point Loma.
