The Statler College of Engineering and Mineral Resources at West Virginia University is currently accepting applications for a technician.
The Lane Innovation Hub Lab Technician is dedicated to assisting and training students/faculty/staff using the Lane Innovation Hub’s systems and fabrication equipment while overseeing a lab space. Lab technicians are to support this work by developing and hosting workshop events and assisting with other Lane Innovation Hub duties as needed.

What you’ll do:
Innovation Hub
Manage the operations of the facilities included in the Innovation Hub, Rapid Prototyping Center. Maintain operating knowledge of all major equipment located in Innovation Hub facilities.
Assist new Innovation Hub users trying to gain access to the facility.
Administer billing and inventory systems for Innovation Hub facilities. Ensure proper rates are being applied to each activity, equipment usage is being recorded appropriately and accurately, and sufficient supply inventory is available to meet customer needs.
Ensure that metrics for equipment usage, inventory, and staff usage are captured and used to guarantee that the needs of students, instructional courses, research, and external users can be met.
Work with Statler College Safety Officer to create and document user training requirements and lab safety protocols for Innovation Hub facilities. Develop plan to coordinate facility access with satisfactory completion of equipment utilization and safety trainings.
Serve as a resource for other maker spaces and innovation initiatives on campus. Work with students, faculty, staff, and community to support development and operations of Innovation Hub programs.
Work with college K-12 outreach staff to develop STEM learning activities.
Work with college recruitment staff to assist with recruitment events within the Innovation Hub.
Rapid Prototyping Facility (ESB G85)
Oversee daily operations in the Rapid Prototyping Center and assign work and responsibilities to the correct shop staff based on his/her knowledge. Supervise shop staff to ensure that a high standard of work is being met.
Manage, maintain, and operate a variety of fabrication and testing equipment used to perform daily tasks and activities of student projects, researchers, and external clients.
Develop, schedule, and instruct fabrication/prototyping workshops for internal users.
Direct users on a variety of prototyping equipment within the Rapid Prototyping Center. Provide operational knowledge on specific processes to assist prototyping activities and maintain the integrity of the equipment.
Assist engineering courses, student projects, and other users in engineering design tasks. Make suggestions and provide feedback on design changes to users based on machine capabilities.
Assist engineering courses, student projects, and other users in prototyping equipment operation. Review machine inputs generated by students, faculty and other users to ensure the safety of the equipment and the user.
Create and maintain an inventory of the Rapid Prototyping Center equipment capabilities. Evaluate equipment and capabilities offered by Innovation Hub facilities.
Determine if offerings are appropriate based on usage, user feedback, and current technologies.
Make suggestions for changes to Innovation Hub Director within the Statler College Dean’s Office.
Create an access schedule and staffing plan for use of the facilities including internal users for recognized courses and research projects, personal projects, and users external to the institution. Monitor plan and adjust as needed to maximize facility availability and satisfy user work requests.
Assist with other functions and tasks in the Innovation Hub as needed.
Qualifications
Apprentice or Vocational program or Associate's Degree
Two years related experience including:
A minimum of one (1) year experience in the following:
Experience in creating projects by using machining or fabrication equipment
Experience in setup, maintenance, and operations of fabrication equipment
Working in a customer service-oriented environment
Welding experience
A minimum of six (6) months experience in the following:
Reading and understanding blue prints and part drawings
Demonstrates an ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing
Demonstrates an ability to select proper processes, techniques, and tooling during fabrication
Demonstrates an ability to organize information, read designs, part drawings, and relay any inconsistencies to customers
Demonstrates an ability to be customer oriented and work effectively with a diverse group of individuals
Demonstrates an ability to perform supervisory duties and support team efforts
Demonstrates an ability to utilize electronic systems for management activities and billing procedures
Demonstrates an ability to operate manual machines including sheet metal fabrication equipment and welding
Ability to learn institutional requirements for the protection of intellectual property, technology transfer, and export control
Ability to learn specific institutional or college policies and procedures
Ability to teach procedures and principles of machining and fabrication
Demonstrates an ability to operate a multitude of software’s required to operate varying degrees of machines and systems
Knowledge of hot works operations and welding principles and the ability to teach and manufacture with said abilities
